The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), on Thursday April 23, 2026, officially received its newly refurbished television studio in a ceremony marked by strong partnerships and renewed commitment to national media development.
In her opening address, the Director General of SLBC, Josephine Kamara, reflected on the state of the institution when she assumed office, describing it as dilapidated and challenging to manage. She noted that through collective effort and a shared vision with her staff, SLBC engaged Africell’s Chief Executive Officer, Shadi Al Gerjawi, for support. This collaboration, according to her, marked a turning point anchored on the principle of “all hands on deck,” which ultimately led to the establishment of the new studio. Madam Kamara emphasized that SLBC belongs to the people, and it is a shared responsibility to support and strengthen the institution.
The Deputy Director General of SLBC, Asmieu Bah, highlighted the dedication and expertise within SLBC, noting that while they have the human capacity to increase output, external support remains crucial. He expressed appreciation to Africell for responding positively to their call for assistance and commended the SLBC Director General for her astute leadership.
Delivering the goodwill message, the CEO of Africell, Shadi Al Gerjawi, reaffirmed the company’s longstanding commitment to Sierra Leone, particularly in supporting the media sector. He stressed that Africell’s support is driven by the belief that Sierra Leoneans deserve accurate and reliable information. Reflecting on the previous condition of the studio, he stressed the urgent need for improvement and called on all institutions to support SLBC as a vital national asset.
The Deputy Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sierra Leone, Zhang Dianbin, extended congratulations to SLBC and highlighted the importance of the media partnership between China and Sierra Leone. He noted that an MoU signed with the Ministry of Information and Civic Education has contributed to the establishment of the new studio. He encouraged continued collaboration to build a vibrant and progressive future.
Delivering the keynote address, the Hon. Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, described the event as a significant milestone and “just the beginning” of greater transformation. On behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone, he expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government and Africell for their support. He noted that the equipment donated by China would play a key role in enhancing SLBC’s operations. The Minister also commended the SLBC Director General, Board Chair and members, and staff for their dedication, while urging them to take proper care of the new equipment.
He further emphasized the need for modern equipment, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and improved conditions for SLBC staff. The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to securing major investment partners to further develop the national broadcaster.
In her closing remarks, the SLBC Board Chairperson, Dr. Willette James, expressed appreciation to the Minister, Africell, the Chinese Ambassador, and all staff. She assured stakeholders of the Board’s continued commitment to advancing SLBC’s growth and impact.
The ceremony concluded with the official handing over and ribbon-cutting performed by the Hon. Minister of Information and Civic Education.
