Koidu City, Kono District, Monday 23 February 2026 – The Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE) has continued its nationwide Civic Engagement Series in Kono District, reaffirming government’s commitment to bringing governance closer to citizens and promoting informed participation in national development.
Welcoming officials and participants, Paramount Chief Emmanuel T. Foyah of Soa Chiefdom described Kono as a united and resilient district determined to redefine its future. He encouraged residents to look beyond diamond mining and invest more in agriculture, noting that reliance on diamonds alone is no longer sustainable given the district’s fertile land. He also urged citizens to remain law-abiding and to engage constructively with government initiatives.
Chairman of the Kono District Council, Augustine Sheku, called on citizens to embrace unity, civic responsibility, and human capital development as key drivers of sustainable progress. He praised the resilience of the people of Kono and highlighted national reforms under the leadership of Julius Maada Bio, particularly the Big Five Game Changers agenda, which focuses on food security, youth employment, economic diversification, infrastructure, and human capital development.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Permanent Secretary Andrew Kamara reaffirmed government’s commitment to transparency, civic engagement, and inclusive governance. He emphasized that MoICE serves as a bridge between government and citizens, ensuring that information reaches communities while citizens’ concerns are relayed back to government.
The Civic Day brought together community leaders, government officials, students, and stakeholders, featuring meaningful contributions from the Senior District Officer and the Deputy Minister of Agriculture. A student debate competition was also held to encourage youth participation in civic discourse.
Activities on the first day concluded with the distribution of cash support, school materials, and census materials. The Civic Engagement Series will continue on 24 February 2026, when the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor A. Bah, is expected to engage senior government officials, Members of Parliament, heads of parastatals, and indigenes of Kono District on national and district development priorities.
