Sierra Leone has joined experts from over 20 countries in Poland for the International Policy Training on Addressing Violent Pasts through Education, held at the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Representing Sierra Leone were Mr. Timothy Sam, Head of Partnership and technical lead for civic education, and Mr. Alphan Alieu Tajawie, Curriculum and Training Director at NaCCED.
Speaking at the training, Mr. Sam noted: “Standing on this historic ground reminds us of the dangers of hatred and silence. For Sierra Leone, it reinforces the importance of building strong civic institutions that safeguard our history and democracy.”
Mr. Tajawie added: “The lessons here will strengthen our efforts to integrate peace, memory, and civic responsibility into education at home.”

As next steps, the Sierra Leone team will engage with public and academic education actors to explore how these lessons can be applied to deepen civic education and promote national cohesion.
