The Head of the Special Security Unit, Andrew Jaiah Kaikai, has provided an update on the operations of the Special Security Unit established by His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio to strengthen the national response to drug and substance abuse. He made the presentation during the Ministry of Information and Civic Education’s weekly press conference held at the Miatta Civic Centre in Freetown on Tuesday, 4th November 2025.
Mr. Kaikai informed media practitioners that the Special Security Unit commenced operations on October 25, 2025, comprising over 200 personnel – 86 police officers (OSD), 95 military officers, and representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Office of National Security (ONS).
Between October 25 and November 3, the Unit conducted coordinated raids targeting over 90 identified hotspots across the Western, Eastern, and Central parts of Freetown. This resulted in 46 arrests, including 28 males and 18 females and seizure of a total of 3,073 wraps of Kush and 63 wraps of a new substance known as “Ash”.
Mr. Kaikai revealed that “Ash,” a newly identified substance, is being used by young people, while Tramadol abuse is also on the rise. He expressed concern over the circulation of Tramadol far exceeding the standard 225 mg, noting that versions of the drug with 500 mg potency have been detected.
He further emphasized that the Unit’s primary role is to target importers, manufacturers, and peddlers of illicit drugs, while also engaging directly with victims as part of the government’s broader rehabilitation approach. “Our focus is on dismantling supply chains, but we also work closely with victims through community engagement,” Mr. Kaikai stated.
Highlighting community response, he disclosed that community members including victims have been very cooperative. “There is a huge appetite and growing public determination to win the war against drugs” he said, citing the positive involvement of religious leaders, parents, and other community members who continue to collaborate with the Special Unit.
Mr. Kaikai concluded by encouraging the public to support ongoing operations by reporting drug-related activities through the 117 hotline. He assured citizens that reports made anonymously will be treated with confidentiality.
