President Julius Maada Bio has assured residents of Makeni that the government will construct the Makama Road leading to the Northeast Regional Government Hospital to improve access to healthcare services.

The President made the commitment during the third edition of the Presidential Townhall held in Makeni City on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, under the theme “Year of Action.” The civic engagement provided an opportunity for citizens to raise concerns and receive direct responses from the President on the government’s performance and development priorities.

Responding to concerns about road access to the hospital, President Bio said the project is aimed at making it easier for patients, healthcare workers, emergency responders and visitors to reach the facility safely and quickly.

He said the road project forms part of the government’s broader commitment to expanding infrastructure and improving access to essential public services across the country.

“The transformation of Sierra Leone into a middle-income country will be heavily dependent on the development of its infrastructure facilities, systems and services,” he said.

President Bio also reaffirmed his administration’s focus on infrastructure development as one of the key pillars of the government’s Big Five Game Changers agenda. He noted that investments in roads, bridges and other public infrastructure are helping to improve access to markets, healthcare, education and other essential services.

“Government takes infrastructure seriously because having a clear direction with priorities on energy, education, and infrastructure is vital to translating flagship programmes into tangible results for our citizens,” he added.

The announcement was welcomed by residents attending the Townhall, many of whom expressed hope that the long-awaited road project will improve transportation, strengthen access to the Northeast Regional Government Hospital and contribute to the socio-economic development of the Makama community and surrounding areas.
