At the Presidential Townhall held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at the Fatima Campus auditorium, University of Makeni, President Julius Maada Bio restated the government’s commitment to a constitutional review process that is open, inclusive and independent. He said the aim is to strengthen democratic governance and ensure the Constitution reflects the needs of the country today.

The President described the Constitution as a document that should grow with the nation. He said it must respond to current realities and changing times. According to him, the review is meant to update the country’s governance system and provide a stronger legal base for future generations. “Our Constitution must be a living document that evolves with the aspirations of our people,” he stated.

He explained that the process builds on years of national discussions and past recommendations, including the work of earlier review bodies and the Constitutional Review Commission. He said these efforts offer a solid starting point for shaping a Constitution that reflects the views of the people.

On concerns about presidential term limits, President Bio said clearly that the review is not about extending his time in office. He said the focus is on making sure the Constitution remains relevant and supports good governance. “This process is not about me or any individual; it is about securing a stronger democratic future for Sierra Leone,” he emphasized.

The President also assured citizens that the process will be transparent, free from interference and open to public participation so that people across the country can have a say in the outcome.
